Occasion- 60th Anniversary of Emmett Till's killing Audience- #BlackLivesMatter activists, pro-black supporters, liberal democrats, social justice activists Purpose- to inform others that the #BlackLivesMatter movement didn't start with Mike Brown or Trayvon Martin but that it's been going on for a long time and still continues Subject- Racial profiling, racial injustice, #BlackLivesMatter movement Tone- Blow uses "savage killing" and "neglected" to depict an indignant tone. Using "savage" creates a negative and demoting connotation to the killer of Emmett Till. Using "neglected" to describe how Emmett Till's body was treated appeals to pathos and creates the tone. He uses the details of the murder such as who did the killing, who was killed, how he was killed, why he was killed and the details create an image of how things went down. He also appeals to pathos because it causes the audience to think about how it would feel if they were in that place. It digs deep into the audience and causes them to feel dismay and fear. The way Blow constructs his tone implies the dismay and disappointment he feels. His mindset towards racial injustice is that it's repeating itself and it's been happening for a long time. His attitude is indignant and remorseful for the lives lost of the long living movement. |
